What is a Healthy Weight?

Body Fat and Health

A healthy weight is not about a number on a scale; it is linked more closely to body fat percentage. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is an approximate measure of body fat based on your height and weight. It is important to remember that as a person's BMI goes higher, body fat percentage tends to rise, increasing the risk for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and certain cancers.

BMI alone, however, does not accurately measure body fat percentage. For example, athletes have a high muscle-fat ratio and may have a high BMI rating, yet can be in excellent health. Excess body fat is the main cause of weight-related diseases. Thus, it is important to have an accurate assessment of your body composition and to talk to your doctor regarding your personal health condition.  In the Optifit program, body fat percentage is precisely measured with our Bod Pod chamber.

To calculate your BMI, and obtain an estimate of your degree of obesity, enter your height (in feet and inches) and weight (in pounds) and click on your gender. Then click the "Compute BMI" button to get your BMI.
